My relative had an operation with Mr Kamath. Reading a previous review I can echo that content. The surgery was elective and only after delays and cancellations. One excuse given was last minute and implausible and I was not convinced was legitimate with conflicting information coming from different sources. I attended with my relative in outpatients 2 weeks after the day surgery. Note my wife did not see him prior to operation day only different surgeons. On surgery day he was present at the beginning and end of surgery. When he visited my wife briefly before operation she was already sedated and it was too late for any meaningful dialogue. Afterwards according to a nurse he spoke to her about the operation while she was not yet conscious enough to remember anything. At the post operative outpatients appointment I noted that Mr Kamath spoke barely a few brief sentences to us and never approached closely to examine the results of his work. I have noted 9 other orthopaedic surgeons at an equivalent time have been attentive and keen to see and discuss the result of their work in their consultations. My relative was discharged completely into the care of physiotherapy by Mr Kamath at this appointment only two weeks after surgery with numerous procedures to her ankle in one operation. Mr Kamath neither touched nor looked closely at her ankle. He declared to my amazement that my relative would be better in two weeks. His assertion has proved completely wrong and many months down the line my relative has had continuing problems with each of the procedures done on the same day in surgery. No one spoken to since, be they physio's or GPs have heard of discharge from this level of surgery at two weeks post op with no follow up appointment. For an ankle injection and arthroscopies my relative was seen at six weeks at least and later too. My relative has been told by a number of them to insist on a follow up. BUT because she was discharged after two weeks by Mr Kamath there is no communication route other than going through the lengthy triaging at primary care level and IF successful, referral again to a hospital consultant probably numerous months later with current work loads. Mr Kamath appears over confident in his skills, too lofty to engage in adequate conversation with patients beneath his consideration. I have recommended my relative to look elsewhere for a second opinion on the surgical procedures carried out and the poor outcomes. The need for future more radical surgery in the long term was anticipated in a consultation with an earlier surgeon. It looks like an offer of such surgery is needed to reduce the problems with her ankle. Hopefully then the surgeon would at the very least have a post op review three month afterward to help with any problems that have arisen. Nowhere have I read that discharge after two weeks is normal. The physios were shocked that the post operative tasks were given entirely to them for the immediate recovery period and had never come across such before. They provide exercises not post op surgery care and do NOT involve themselves or are not trained to handle post op complications of bone surgery, scars, pain that requires a surgeon's input. (Given a list of possible complications that can arise post the five procedures listed on the discharge letter my relative has all but two). Nor can physios refer back to the surgeon. Nor can the patient walk into the Emergency Centre to see the consultant, nor do urgent care offer advice or treatment where a follow up should have been provided by the surgeon. GPs do not have the skills needed and can only initiate the re referral process which is increasingly lengthy and with frustrating triaging obstacles put in place to save money and delay expenditure by the LCG not in the interest of the patient. I can not hand on heart recommend Mr Kamath to anyone. Those who have recommended him are fortunate indeed to have enjoyed a good all round level of excellence.

Response from Mr Ravindra Kamath

I am indeed sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the care of your relative. We indeed try our best to get favourable outcomes for our patients. It would have been useful to contact my secretary if you had any concerns so that they could be addressed at the appropriate time.

Hi I had an operation with this guy. But did not meet him in advance.! Anything I know about the op came second hand and minimal from a nurse or physio or a team doctor,There were four sentences spoken to me by this guy at a two week discharge. So a surgeon of few words. So I can't say whether he's a good listener or if I trust him.... That's a shame. Maybe he can learn to communicate with his patients? That would be nice. I'd read that surgeons that don't talk to you were a thing of the past? So he might be a really good surgeon or maybe he didn't actually do my operation? He was there I know that as he said hello at least as I was waiting to go into the theatre. Not sure I'd see him again if I was unlucky to need further operations .

I am sorry to hear that you had an unsatisfactory experience with me and my team. I do apologise. It would be good to know more details about your procedure. You could contact me through he Peterborough City hospital switchboard or my secretary. It could be that it was a trauma surgery situation where there is not much opportunity for patient interaction.

Mr Kamath has been treating me for my Charcot condition for the last 7 years, he has operated on my ankle on three occasions. I could not wish for a more caring and informative consultant. He has gone above and beyond in his care for me and helped me get over the rough patches. I am thankful that I can call him my consultant.
